During WWII the navy used to inject water into the cylinders of carrier borne aircraft during takeoff. Concentrated air and compression it was, and it vastly improved the power scope. The problem was that it also vastly decreased engine life, but in a war that was no problem. An engine rated for 1000 hours between overhaul was simply dumped overboard after a few hundred hours and replaced with a new one. Lather, rinse, repeat.

But not so smart in a commercial economy.
