I don't know whether the higher compression ratio is acheived via smaller combustion chambers in the heads of if the US has smaller pistons. I would have thought the head but can't say for sure. The Euro cars also had cat's, I believe that cat's were on all vehicles post 86 and prior to that it was an option.
