But if they did removed the engine, you should check the Russian VIN site to see the the block and trans serial numbers match with the VIN.
The guy that had the car before us only had it about a year and knows little to nothing about MB's(he drove a ford escort...)....it then died one day (well, started burning oil bad and burping it up the dipstick tube ) while he was on the freeway... so he had it diagnosed with a broken ring or cracked piston at a german auto place here in town, he didn't want to pay to fix it, so he put it on craigslist....we got it the same day. Whoever attempted the tranny removal....or whoever did remove and put it back in, was long ago....prior to the previous owner.

We'll look into the tranny next week....we'll probably get it rebuilt. Then we can begin the reconstruction process. We also have to order an oil cooler line, a tranny hard line, and a few other things....so the delay is ok...we're in no rush to get it on the road...its the spare project car....and it will never be driven in the winter either. (It never has been)
