Almost all 300E's sold in the U.S. were six cylinders, with the vast majority the 12 valve SOHC 3.0 liter engine. None of the sedans had the 24 valve 3.0 liter engine. Some of the W124's had a 2.6 liter engine, and more had the 2.8 liter engine. There were no four cylinder W124's sold in the U.S.

Only the Coupes got a 24 valve DOHC version of the 3.0 liter engine, and that was from 1990-1992.

A 24 valve DOHC 3.2 liter engine (M104) was used in all 6 cylinder W124 sedans, coupes, wagons, and convertibles from 1993-1995.
