Blown head gasket

I found out why the engine in my 220d will not start. I pulled all the injectors from the engine, and then connected a compression tester. When I engaged the starter and to my horror antifreeze shot out of cylinders 2 and 3. I think the head gasket is blown (I hope.) I was suspicious before I found this out, because the cooling system was being pressurized and would leak out of the heater valve. I drained the oil. About quart was antifreeze was at the bottom of the oil. I am going to have to pull the head to see it in-fact the head gasket is blown, and see if there is not more damage. My question is can I do this without removing the engine from the car and reset the timing chain? I know water in a diesel is very bad. Is there any chance this engine might not be ruined because of this? What do I need to do with the timing chain before I can pull the head?
Thank you for any help.
