I believe the 80s model has an extra wire that goes to a temperature sensor that senses the coolant temperature. The later ones have a temperature sensitive resistor (not wired externally) that serves the same function.
Look at the pins where the connector goes and see if there are the same amount of pins.
Other than the above I do not know.
