Yes, this method will give you an aproxmiate idea of your Timing Chain stretch. (How about telling us what you got when you did it.)
There is 1 complication that I can think of.
Mercedes make offset Woodruff Keys in several offsets that can be installed on the Camshaft to adjust the Camshaft Timing Gear back to a normal timing range.
If you have an engine that has 250,000 miles on it and the Timing Chain stretch is "0" the chain must have been replaced or someone has installed one of the offset Woodruff Keys (asuming it was timed correctly to begin with).
