I believe conventional way to get the IP off is to remove the Oil Filter Housing. Also there is a bolt somewhere (I have not seen it myself) in the back underside of the IP that goes through a bracket.
Someone at the local junkyard removed an IP from an 82 300SD without removing the Oil Filter Housing. It appeard that he removed the Vacuum Shtuoff (I found it on the ground near the car; it was no good) from the back of the IP and was able to remove the IP without removing the Oil Filter Housing. Howere, I have not tired this myself and maybe a 300D is different.
