Go to dieselgiant.com and follow the testing tutorial there for the W123 GP's. Relay looks a tad different on the W210 but the principals are the same.
You'll need a multimeter.
The K40 relay is in the right side computer appratus box under the hood. Front most unit. I doubt it is the culprit in this instance. It feeds power to many systems similar to what the older OVP relay used to do.
