The car is basically a scaled down 300 (124). The 190 (201) came out in 1982 (europe) whereas the 124 came out in 1985 (europe). As such, the 124 was a bit more refined and updated; the 201 was the first of the "generation." Having owned one for over a decade, and having owned 123's, 124's and 126's, I believe that the 123 adn 126 cars are more bullet proof. On the other hand, the 124 and 201 have updated systems and are generally more comfortable and efficient cars.
It is true that these cars have the 601-603 engine series. The 4 is the 601, and is generally thought to be the least durable of the bunch. The best one is thought to be the 5 cylinder 602. With that being said, I have a 601 with 324,000 miles that gets 80 miles a day at ~ 75-90 mph. It has a fully original engine.
It is a great car.
