The first thought that comes to my mind on this age car are "What kind of condition are the rubber hoses at the calipers in". These should be replaced if they have never been replaced. Personally, I would not accept the pads staying hard against the rotors. Yes, they will wear down and eventually provide some clearance but it should not be like that. Also, don't forget to replace the brake fluid.
