The 68 vette my dad had, ran with no air filter either, just the open Holley carb and no filter.

Its not that we didn't want one, we just gouldn't get one to fit unless we put on the hood that was raised up more over the air cleaner, and well we decided not to bother.

The raised weiand manifold with the holley carb made for a mean 327 engine.

That car never had issues with running with no air filter, but then again, we're talking 1968 chevy engine and all vs highly sophisticated german machinery.

I wouldn't run a benz without the airfilter.
