On a finite planet with finite resources, why is it a national goal to have growth and expansion year after year? Why is it not OK and acceptable to take a breather from the mindless spending and consumerism that puts people in debt up to their ears?

Now the gov is trying to coax more people into debt by inducing them to buy new cars. I can understand them trying to save manufacturing jobs, but supply has to follow demand, not the other way around. Right now people are trying to save, and savings rates are supposedly up.
