Now If I was to rent a room with strangers in the town of the job I'd be looking at $400-$500 rent plus utilities/food/etc.

There might be someone on the Forum who would rent you a room for the duration of your internship. Diesel here is 2.39 a gallon. i would not ride a motorcycle on the Beltway...
