My opinion on this is that if the car is running good, the fuel mileage is about right, and the exhaust looks normal (no unusual amounts of smoke at start up or heavy acceleration), no unusual smell, noises, running rough, etc, you should be safe to drive it with the check engine light. I would get it fixed at earliest convenience, but if all is in order (see above) I'd take the trip.
