My 84 190e has a grinding noise coming form the transmission area. It is louder in the lower gears and subsides when get to 5th.
I have been away at school and have not been driving the car I came home to this problem. Upon inspection of trans fluid. I found a low fluid leve, that was thick and black (was changed 6 mo. earlier) yet had no metal shavings or chunks in it? Is this a bearing problem in the trans? Or is it general trans failure. If possible is there a trans rebuild kit available I have a friend who will do this for nothing if it is the problem.
