I've never been a fan of integrated trans coolers. IMHO, they should be separate.
If you do decide to add a separate cooler, you must be very careful to make sure it has enough surface area as well as sufficient air flow.
I discussed this with a mechanic once, in regards to my old school bus. One thing he pointed out is that the coolant in the radiator keeps the trans fluid from overcooling, which could be an issue in very cold climates.
I don't really know, but those are things definitely worth considering.
