I ran a cheap parts store electric pump on my '88 7.3 IDI pick up - following the advice of the folks at dieselstop.com - if nothing else- it sure made fuel filter changes a hell of a lot less stressfull!

I don't think your problem is the fuel pump however - air is getting into the system some place.
