Are you asking about the Hornet? The one I mentioned did crash. You could see the fireball just off the end of the deck. I believe the pilot ejected, but the plane went in the ocean.

The arresting cable did some serious damage to the people and equipment on the deck, though. You could just make out the blur of it whipping around the deck. I think those cables are about 2" thick.

When you see news footage of flight operations going smoothly on carriers, you forget how dangerous it is out there.
