82 300D turbo

So, I am trying to loosen the twin belts that run over the water pump and the alternator, by moving the nut sitting on the front end of the alternator, but nothing seems to happen.

I loosened the bolt on the bottom that keeps the alternator in place.

The nut on the front end of the alternator starts developing a tilt when I move it out to far, I don't think I can completely take it off.

Moving it in doesn't do much either, it thightens up the clip.

Well, maybe I am turning the wrong nut.

What's the trick to loosen the alternator? Do I need a crowbar to level and push the unit at some point and to get the belts loose?

Any ideas?
