OK, so the head is still an unknown, I take it, as far as being checked for cracks and maybe even warpage. These engines are known to be neglected, and overheats are common, leading to head falures. Aside from that, it would also be fairly easy to just loosen the front pipes from the exhaust manifold to see if the pre-cats are plugged. We had one 2.3 in which the head gasket failure was ultimately traced to overheat caused by plugged pre-cats.
