Navy - 77-81. Pacific Fleet guided missile destroyer Waddell. Expeditionary Medal for being the first task group to patrol the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Abadan. Spent 88 days in those tropical waters without an unrep. We were down to just hot dogs and bug juice and one shower every two weeks due to fresh water shortages. There was swim call, but no one participated because of shark infestation. We enlisted personnel did not know it then, but we were part of the hostage rescue plan that ultimately failed with the Delta Force marine helicopter crash in a sandstorm in Iran. Tomorrow I will be paying tribute to those 8 marines, among others.
