Does it seem like your '96 up-shifts very early compared to the '97? That could be why. On the '96 you can adjust the cable that controls this (right in front of the brake fluid reservoir). More tension will result in delayed up-shifts and less resistant down-shifts. I have mine set all the way to max, and it's better than it was originally, but I wish I could go further as the transmission is still not as responsive as I'd like to have it. I've never driven a '97 so I can't say my '96 is a dog in comparison but I know it's a dog compared to the 98+ turbo models.
