The 83 and 85 are both a 617.952 engine, so is the calif 85.
the calif 85 has the same mounting arms, and the transmission will bolt to one, no difference.

the calif starter has the solenoid on the bottom instead of on top. this is to clear the trap. should be able to use the starter either way.

the blocks are the same except for the end of the crank, the hole for a pilot bearing is smaller if an 85 is to be used with a manual trans.

there were three HP ratings on the OM616...

1) Not much power
2) Even less power
3) Not nearly enough power!! 240D w/auto

Anyone that thinks a 240D is slow drives too fast.
