Yes you need to change the filter. It is a paper element that most closely performs like a normal oil filter, just different shape and flow. There are fine mesh screens in the valve body that are designed to collect the bigger stuff and not gunk up the little bearings and springs and such, but the actual filter is on the bottom where the pan is. Its easy enough to do anyways, $30 for the extra assurance, and get a new pan gasket too.
