I didn't realize this at first, but this happened quite close to home: South Lake Tahoe, a 1-2 hour drive from my place. The local news channels were all over this story last night. Apparently some cop ran into that guy, did a background check, scheduled a parolee appointment for him, to which the guy showed up with the kidnapped girl and her kids (I guess pretending they are his legit family) and that's how they found them. It was an error on the part of the kidnapper. Good thing he made that error. I also read that the girl actually became quite bonded to him and maybe after a while she didn't even try to escape anymore.
