Here is a good picture of how an 82sl heater fan control switch works.
The contacts are built like a tank and a vacuum control built in. With the fan switch turned all the way counter clockwise the vacuum closes off.
If your heater fan doesn't have the variable speed you once had then clean the four contacts you see in the photo.
