On my UNIMOG, the transmission behaves as you describe: There is a separate reversing lever that changes the direction of 1st and 2nd gears so you get a 6+2 transmission.
This is unusual for a road vehicle though and in car transmissions, reverse is accomplished by sliding a gear in between the countershaft and the output shaft while the other gears remain dis-engaged. Never more than one of the shift levers should be clicked forward or backward at the same time.
