It's a magnetic sensor w/ no electronic parts. They're pretty reliable and usually don't fail unless the unit is mechanically damaged.
One last point; If it was "bad", the car wouldn't run!

True, but if they were beginning to fail, one would have hard hot starts or starting in general. Usually the crank sensor is the last to be checked though.
