It's definitely something I just can't fathom MB engineers let by.

Well, I bit the bullet and got a new oil cooler. Anti-seize on the nuts and we're good to go. I also replaced some of the small rubber tubing affixed to those small plastic tubes.

So, let this be a lesson, kids. The replacement "screwed, nipples" DO NOT fit the 300SDL oil cooler hoses!
