W123 changing shocks, hit a snag.

I picked up some KYB's for the front end and a steering damper for my 84 300D. Started to remove the front passenger side shock, and after dealing with the top, I went below to find some very strange nuts fixing the shocks. They are like "outie" hex nuts, almost like stars, but with many more ridges. In fact, the closed, circular end of a wrench, size 10mm, fits every groove on the nut, but that wrench is to big to move it.

I am going to Harbor Freight today in hopes of finding a socket that will fit these nuts, but I've never seen them before and they are of course not described in Haynes. Any advice? Are these common?
