Fuel Pump Relay would be my first replacement. My 1984 190E had the exact same symptoms you describe. Seems the factory units are not hermetically sealed and the innerds tend to get moisture in 'em and corrode. The replacement units are sealed (tho' don't know why MBZ doesn't just install these in the first place).
