Swinging a 10 lb sledge over the head in a splitting wood motion is more than enough force to get ball joint out, so the knuckle won't absorb the entire impact, so, not an issue.
It's funny that you bring up the MB recommendation.
They're not infallible. T'is blasphemy. They don't want you to bend the knuckle, so they're going to take the safest course. Not to mention, putting it into a vice that can take it is probably easier.
