VW originally designed the 2.0 TDI engine with a chain driven balance shaft and oil pump that can be problematic. Chain is deemed too small and tensioners can break. Failures can happen anytime after 50,000 miles. Though many people have driven well over 150,000 miles on the original chain, including one I know of at around 250,000 miles.

The fix is to replace the whole balance module which includes the oil pump to a new unit that operates off a gear drive. Parts are around $1200 not including labor. VW, even though made an update to this part, will not formally make a recall because they don’t think it is a big problem. Some folks have been successful in getting their warranty company to pay for it and others have paid out of their pocket for the fix.

The effected models that I know are 2004-2005 Passat TDI with the BHW engine here in the states and evidently the Audi A4 2.0 TDI with the BLB engine in Europe built before 2006.
