Hey all, I posted this in diesel discussion, however, it's applicable to other W124s with similar part numbers / design (manual drivers side mirror, power passenger side mirror, both electrically heated).
Tools I used:
- Prying device, I used my Victorinox Swisstool with two small pieces of cereal box for padding.
- Cloth / paper towel for cleaning
Both my outside mirrors were scratched pretty badly. I'm not sure how it happened, as it was that way when I bought the car. Through this forum I happened upon a set of [new-in-box] OE Mercedes mirrors. This is near verbatim with the W124 FSM, albeit with greater details (and a slight problem during the install).
Read on!
Drivers side first...
- It may be a little easier with the window down (and / or with the door open). Manually manipulate the mirror such that the outside edge is more accessible. You'll be lightly prying from that side.
- Once you pop the joint free, it'll be held by the mechanism that manipulates its configuration and the power cable for the heated mirror.
- Disconnect the power connection and gently slide the mirror off of the mechanism (it slides parallel to the mirror's surface).
- To install, do the reverse (
). Actually, it's a little more wiggling and fun trying to get the mechanism seated onto the mirror after doing the power connection. I found the easiest was was to hold the inside adjustment knob and firmly push it in place with a clean rag. Again, it slides parallel to the mirror's surface.
- Then, swing it into position (clockwise from above), and firmly push the face in place with that clean rag. The socket will pop on and you'll be good to go.
Next, passenger side (a little more fun
)
- With the engine on or in the glow position, adjust the mirror down, and to the left. This is because you'll be prying the mirror in that direction and you want the small joints connected to the actuators to pop off easily without having to worry about moving the mechanism.
- Again, pry gently from the outside (near the middle or top) and it'll come free. Disconnect the heated mirror power connection, and remove the mirror.
- To install is a bit more trouble - you have the turnstile and two small sockets for the up/down and left/right actuators. Unfortunately for me, the turnstile (metal cross in the center) remained on the car, and not with mirror (like the manual's pictures). It may turn out easier to remove it from the housing and install it on the new mirror glass.
- Before you start connecting the new mirror glass, use the inside adjustment to the up / right corner. This puts the actuators in the retracted position (good, since you'll be pushing against them).
- Connect the power.
- Carefully align the mirror and firmly push into place with a clean rag. The turnstile and sockets should click into place, and you'll be good to go.
