They failed to see consequences in the long term, now there are few printers (yours truly) and fewer reporters.

I do think a limited number of news outlets will be able to charge for online news. The WSJ is also going to a paid model, I believe. I don't think it will work for smaller papers who get most of their national news from the wire services.
