I like the idea of a Isuzu Trooper (but a 616 would be a better fit)
I also like the idea of a Jeep XJ swap- since it took the AMC 6 cylinder there should be clearance for the OM617. You would probably have to fab up oil pans and you might have to loose the 4WD unless you can find a divorced transfer case or do the custom bell housing adapter to bolt the original Jeep transmission to the MB engine.

Somebody did set of calculations and if you take a Jeep that gets 14mpg with its gasser and you convert it to OM617 power and get 27mpg, you would save $1100 over 12000 miles.

I could see an OM617 returning that kind of mileage in a CJ since it is so light. An XJ you would probably get 300SD mileage...
