if it has the original headgasket, you should really consider replacing it on principle... seriously.
the technology since the 80's is far, far behind that of today's. When you compare the original gasket next to a new gasket, you will understand fully.
With the engine out of the bay, you should take the opportunity to take advantage of the space available. Replace any gasket within reason, the main seals shouldn't even be questioned.
