Take a look at this pdf walkthrough. It's really informative and I give credit to the guy who originally wrote it-- he did a great job. It's for a w201, but the rear subframes are essentially the same.

I ended up removing the ENTIRE rear end, which means removing the springs and shocks. But following the pdf's above, you wouldn't have to do this.
