'78 280CE - California vs. Federal/Euro M110

hey all, i found a great looking 280CE and went ahead and bought it! i currently own an '83 300D and i'm venturing out of the diesel world finally. i've been pretty active over at the diesel forum but i think i might be moving on.

i'm trying to find out the differences (specific list or details) between the California m110's and the federalized m110's. the P.O. of the car i'm buying sent me the original purchase order/receipt with all the paperwork. listed towards the bottom, buried in the optional equipment list is number 494 - Cal. Emission Control Equipment (at no extra charge! thanks! ). what exactly does that include? i assume the catalytic converter is more restrictive? is there an egr that can be blocked/removed like with the 617? i'm free to mess with the car all i want as NY doesn't do emissions stuff with pre '95 vehicles and my mechanic is a good friend anyway.

i know what everyone is going to say: find a euro engine and stick it in there. and i might do that in the future, but for now, are there any easy little things i can do to turn this Cali crap off? i plan on getting custom exhaust work done so that will take care of that, but what else? i've heard there might be "smog" related equipment? anything else? what can be done about it?

the body is perfect, no rust Arizona car, silver green metallic, everything working perfectly, low miles, garaged, all the good stuff. i want this thing to go with some pep! thanks!
