I was, if you're interested, having a seating problem with the torque converter seal and was not able to push the torque converter far enough into the transmission.
Patience, an old wheel bearing guide, a hammer and a second pair of hands fixed it all.

all the TC's I've ever had to seat, it was always an alignment issue. pull, lift turn jiggle etc until it goes in. i'd not be hitting on one myself...
