The Detali.ru site states that the W126 originally had a W201 P/N'd star
A 201 880 00 86 Replaced by A 124 880 00 86
The same site lists the W123 as having the W201 P/N'd star
A 201 880 00 86 Replaced by A 124 880 00 86
So I'm guessing the W123 had its own W123 P/N'd star while the W126 had its own one too but both were superseded by the W201 P/N and then by the W124 P/N stars.
The W123 star is very slightly tilted backwards but almost looks vertical. It would look weird if the W124 had a vertical star (does not follow the slant line of the front fascia). The W126 was more vertical than the W124 so it would have a more vertical star. The W201 is also more vertical than the W124 so it's no wonder the W126 star was replaced by the W201 star, but I don't know why they stopped making the W123 star.
