Ok, how about this from BMW:

Quote:
Electronically controlled engine cooling - sometimes called "map" cooing - controls the engine thermostat in response to engine speed, engine load and outside temperature, rather than just coolant temperature. This allows the engine to operate at higher temperatures under light-load conditions, which can increase fuel economy and benefit heater effectiveness.
You maybe weren't around in the 1970s when all the Detroit iron mongers switched to 190 degree thermostats--that was done in the interest of emissions and fuel economy, too.

Current Mercedes engines feature electronic engine cooling thermostats, too. Mercedes has done it a bit better than BMW, as there's no "replace water pump/thermostat/overflow tank/radiator/hoses every 60K miles" recommendation as there is for BMWs. That heat is tough on the plastic.

You understand that the engine bay is hotter because the engine is running hotter?
