722.6 tranny wiring bypass?

Hello all,

I've embarked on "Project Insanity" putting a 5-speed manual into my '97 E300D. Got most of the hard stuff done, now in a bit of a dilemma.

Prior to pulling the auto. I disconnected the wiring at the control module in the engine bay. Everything fired up and ran down the road (in limp mode). Now I have the manual tranny in, ground strap on the block, original 12-pin tranny plug disconnected, auto shifter connections still attached at shifter.

Car will cycle glow plugs fine, crank and start for a second then shut off. Will try to start if you keep holding key, but never catch again until cycled again. Drove into the garage fine, so no issue with fuel feed. Any ideas what is happening? Some kind of sensor from the missing tranny I can bypass or loop back to itself?? Have WIS, but really can't quite make out the wiring diagrams !

Thanks,
Klaus

BTW, I am working with a rather tired old extra car with a baked-to-a-crisp automatic, not some creampuff, so please don't call me too crazy for trying!!
