I got lucky - tonight I drove down to my friend's house. He evacuated the system, pulled the vacuum, recharged it with fresh 134a and we started testing.

Right away I noticed a difference - I started getting voltage at the compressor plug right away. I knew this was a good sign.

We ran the car, clicked the A/C on and sure enough it started to cool and it kept getting cooler and cooler. We continued to recharge the system. It seems to be working great now.

This makes me soooooo happy: Yippie, yahoo, yeah!

Very satisfying. Thanks all for all your suggestions and guidance.
