I'm pulling the engine and tranny (617 and 4 speed tranny), as well as the drive shaft and rear end along with the axles out of a 83 240D. The 79 had the original engine and 4 speed tranny in it, which I have pulled.
My thoughts are that if I pull everything out of the 83 it should, for the most part bolt right into the 79. The shift rods in the 79 are quite a bit longer, and the linkage on the 79 tranny are further forward - see photo's above. I measured the tranny and the 83 appears to be a little longer ~ 1 inch.
I want to do whatever is easiest. If leaving the 83 tranny bolted to the 84 617 means I don't have to change the driveshaft that is the way to go. If I can use the 79 tranny and not have to change anything but the linkage I would use it, since I have to change the linkage anyway.

Why would you use the 79 tranny, just curious...

Use a transmission X member from a 240D automatic. do not try to modify the the 240D X mount.

Use the 240D front section of the drive line and have it shortened and balanced.

I would use the 79 transmission, then use the clutch, slave, master and throw out bearing you are already using.

measure both transmissions, but Iam sure they are both the same length.

Did you have the manual FW match balanced to the auto FW?
