Actually, I think the paint in the engine compartment should have the same "luster" as the exterior paint...the underhood temps cause the paint to "wear" more rapidly, which is why after some years, it has a more "satin-y" look.
I'm a purist, and unless the engine compartment is such that you can remove enough components to be able to get the painted surfaces, I don't know any other way of doing this other than removing the engine and other components that are in the way...
