There are many different rims that will fit the early 124 cars.
On my 87, I have 16" rims from a 1999 E320. They fit fine, and now days, 16 inch tires are made with much more choices then 14 or 15 inchers.

I was even told 17 inchers from a 211 will fit, but I never verified.
