Following the excellent advice from here I removed my dash (w124 - '90 300D) and replaced the vacuum actuators that are used in the HVAC system. I had originally bought 6 rebuilding kits from Performance Analysis but after reading some comments I went ahead and used MB original parts.

If anyone would like the kit at a very low price contact me. It has three (3) double diaphragm and three (3) single diaphragm in the kit.

I bought these thinking they were appropriate but some on this board are critical of them. George Murphy, the owner of Performance Analysis, thinks they work well. I don't know and do not want to deceive anyone. I thought I'd ask before setting them aside and forgetting about them.
