you may be on to something there with an air manifold leak,it will act as a vacum leak causing and eratic idle,there is also an idle control valve it commonly gets old and cacked full of carbon,its located in the front of the fuel distributor,its a big round aluminum item the has 2 black tubes coming from it,pull it out and make sure its not all gummed up with carbon,this will sieze the valve inside that moves,if so then get carb cleaner spray it inside the valve let it sit,keeep doing this and trying to clean it out,you can inspect the valve while its out just have some one turn the key you wil see the valve open then close,you will then know if its working fine.if its siezed then get a new or used one thats fairly clean.goodluck
